Task 3 - Understanding the design of a suite of television idents.

Task 3 -

What is a suite of idents?

When television channels create new idents they do not only create an idents, but they create suites. A suite of idents is a group of idents that have similar themes, this means that the idents can be linked together with there themes. Having a full suite of idents provides a variety of interest for the audience and having one theme creates brand identity.

Time and Place

A suite of idents helps ensure that the right type of ident appears next to the right type of content. At different times of the day it may require a different tone of ident, the programme ident may also require a particular tone to ensure that the ident links with the programme. A suite of idents allows the channel to appear to the right target audience at different times of the day. A television ident like this would be shown during the day as this is the time of day that all of the nature programmes are on, this may appeal to older people or middle-aged parents.

Seasonality

Christmas always demonstrates a new suite of idents across almost all channels. At christmas it allows every channel to bring out a new set of idents that relate to that specific time of year, in these idents it may have some evidence of some of the shows that will be on over christmas. There are many different example of some of the themed idents that have been shown and many of them tend to be in a suite of idents that are each similar.

On channels like the BBC they make large varieties of ident suites, this is because they have a large number of different shows that are on throughout the day and this channels uses different idents for different times of the day. Some of the most commonly knowns suites on BBC are idents that have the same themes but are different idents completely, these idents all relate to one another and come be used at different times of the day and the year.

This ident is a famous idents that was shown during the olympics in Britain in 2012, throughout the day they would show different idents such as this one that are associated with one another. In these idents they use famous athletes and would use the idents that was associated with the next event that was being shown in the olympics. This particular ident is based on the long jump and in the ident it would tell audience what was on next. This ident is targeting the audience of people that watched all of the olympics.

This ident is another one that was shown during the period when the olympics were in London and this is demonstrating hammer throwing. They would use this to show when this actual event was on television and it would show what the event is to interest audience to keep the channel on to watch that specific event. These suites of idents would also show other countries athletes performing in these specific event rather than just British athletes. This would be targeted to adults that watched the olympics throughout the day.

This ident was focusing on beam gymnastics and this would have been shown at the period of time when the gymnastics was being shown on television during the olympics. These examples are all similar as they are all based on the olympics. This particular advert would be shown during the day when parents would have the free time to watch these events. The target audience would be adults and elderly people as many of them would have watched the whole of the olympics during the day.

This ident is showing the hurdling and would be shown at the period of time when the event was shown on the television. The target audience for this ident would be adults and elderly people that would have time during the day to watch this event. These events would have been shown during the daytime as by the afternoon all of the original programmes would have been on.
